Good morning, I am seeking information on determining measures that can be used to provide quality information for two areas - printed circuit board manufacture and, more generally, engineering and design. My role in our quality program has more or less been defined as being responsible, in part, with determining appropriate "metrics" related to quality and compiling and reporting on the data collected. The interest is primarily focused on being able to measure and show the level of quality of various products and functional areas. While I have disagreements with some of the basic assumptions and the direction of this work, I can only express my opinion. I need to familiarize myself with circuit board manufacture and the commonly used measurements which help define and direct quality improvement efforts. What things have others found useful in guiding work to improve yields, profitability and reduction in rework and repair? On a more difficult note, I need to find what has been used to measure quality and direct quality improvement efforts in the area of engineering and design. What can be measured and what can't? - At least at reasonable cost. What are good, representative measures of the level of quality for the engineering function? I am asking the members of this list for help in determining resources and learning sources that can help me in my quest. I certainly do not expect - though I would welcome - specific instruction as to "how" and "what" to do. Any help, suggestion, or direction is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
