Hi. My name is Velvet Delorey, and I'm a screenwriter (s'pose I should say "scriptwriter", since that's the title of this group). Anyway, a friend of mine and I have been discussing this precise subject through email, and we both noticed that this (unmoderated) newsgroup is totally empty....and we're starting to mailbomb each other <grin>. So, we've decided to get together in this forum - and all others are more than welcome! C'mon, people, there have _got_ to be some scriptwriters out there somewhere who are willing to talk about the subject seriously! (Don't get me started on bit.listserv.screen-l. Please. My blood pressure....) First of all, let's lay a few groundrules: We don't want beginners. For the simple reason that you might get lost. Talk will probably turn to the technical around here. If you're interested, but just starting out, watch current movies and then read the scripts they're based on (the usual advice), but (the unusual advice) sit down and WRITE first....then join this discussion.....<g> After all, that's why we're called scriptWRITERS, correct? Anyway, a brief introduction to the topic(s) we will be covering, and ourselves (my friend and I). I am Canadian, I got my high school education through distance learning, and have little to no use whatsoever for University, or the stuffed talking heads that come out of them. That said, my friend (Anna Keaney, btw) is a University film studies graduate, and she's not stuffed in the least! <bg> She can provide whatever other bio she wants on herself. Now that that's over with, here's our current discussion: We are currently hashing out technics vs. non-technics in film. Keaney (Or Anna) feels that creativity is almost the only thing necessary for filmmaking. She also feels that a script is not required for a good film to be made. I think she wants to be a writer/director, and is coming at this subject from an indie POV. Unlike yours truly. Grovelling apologies, keaney, if I've misquoted. (Correct me if I'm wrong!) I, on the other hand, am coming from the _real_ world. <G> I haven't got any professional credits to my name yet (some semi-pro ones, but those are disaster stories _no one_ wants to hear). but I'd like to think I'm fairly well-grounded in the industry, and am looking to focus on science fiction television in particular, and all I want to be when I grow up is a _working_ screenwriter (I'm already a screenwriter, I just have to get that "working" thing in....). Well, I think that about covers it, in a nutshell. No one else was here but some "FREE MONEY" spam, so we decided we'd up the signal-to-noise ratio a little. Well, let's get to it!
