I believe putting ham traffic over local cable might be a violation of FCC rebroadcast rules (not on the part of the hams but on the part of the cable operator). If it were legal to encrypt ham-based SKYWARN nets I'd do it. The general public should be listening to NOAA Weather Radio and *official* outlets like broadcast TV/radio and CATV override. Traffic on SKYWARN nets, IMHO, whether ham or public safety (police/fire/CD), is *not* intended for direct public consumption. These nets are designed for inter-agency and intra-agency communication and coordination. The information contained within them is raw, tentative, and often highly inaccurate. While one could argue that the public might gain valuable lead time by listening to local nets my feeling is that the average scanner listener does not have enough knowledge to sort the facts from the garbage. A better solution would be to have your local cable TV company NOAA pipe weather radio though a designated channel and continuously run the latest radar loop/warnings from the TWC WeatherStar box. Spotter radio networks (even those run by the local emergency management agency) do not represent the "official" word. We should encourage people to get their info through proper, designated, channels. My opinion only. I do believe that making live (or better yet, delayed) Internet broadcasts of the nets available would serve an educational purpose. Many net control operators could learn from listening to how professional, tactical, nets are operated. ..Chris.. *====================================================================* Chris Hayes Novy - WA9V Internet: chris@siu.edu Southern Illinois Univ. chris@lib.siu.edu Sr. Systems Analyst Phone: (618) 453-1683 (work) Morris Library (618) 457-6149 (home) Carbondale, IL 62901-6632 FAX: (618) 453-3440 *====================================================================* +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from SKYWARN send e-mail to LISTSERV@PO.UIUC.EDU with "unsub skywarn" in the body of your message.
