To: SOS LIST I am forwarding this to the list according to the author's request. SD -------------------------------------------------------- I am wondering if there is an index of anonymous FTP sites with data sets for public use, other than GSS. Would any of the members of this list know anything about this? I believe all social research data should be available for public use. Owner protected data not only protect the interests of the researcher but his ability to draw imaginary conclusions from them. The question that comes up is how valid and real are the data. In the space-age computer technology data sets can be created with statistical validity (possible randomness) but be artificially made to fit the hypothesis of the researcher. 1. How are we protected from this? 2. Should the government regulate data collection of all kinds? 3. Do we trust governmental or private agencies to regulate collection? Hmmmm......! Should I go and research the topic before I ask those questions in public? Oh, well. I am a student and I can say anything I like :) Kosmas I. Pentakalos UMBC Medical Sociology
