                     [The Conclusion of Part One]

Now, at this moment, you may be wondering what exactly it is that
Daniel Atoz is doing while the Z-Team and the Ninjas are doing serious
damage to one another. Well, let's take a look, shall we?

The CEO-turned-Mage flipped through the spellbook, seaching for the
series of spells he needed to put his plans into action. Unlike his
earlier spells, which had only required manipulation of the local energy
fields, the spell that he desired required more physical ingredients.
Hence the bubbling cauldron that had been put on a low simmer throughout
most of the day.
"Hmmmm..." Atoz mumbled to himself as he studied the arcane lore in
the dusty old tome. "Ah! Here it is... the final spell." Atoz marked
the page with a post-it note, and began checking through his inventory for
the required ingredients. As he did so, he added each new item to the
bubbling stew.
"Gizzard of newt... check." Atoz dropped the contents of a small bowl
into the cauldron. The contents began to bubble ominously.
    "Teriyaki sauce... check."
"Sugar cubes... check." Atoz emptied several boxes of cubes into the
liquid. The sugar cubes dissolved immediately.
    "Two frog legs... check."
"Horseradish... check." A dollop of freshly chopped horse radish
sufficed for his purposes, causing the mix to change color.
    "Lamb brains... check."
"Hot paprika... check." Atoz tossed in a large helping of powder,
which poofed and sparked on the roiling surface of the hot liquid.
    "Soy sauce... check."
"And, for that extra zing, hydrochloric acid..." Atoz poured some of
of the potent acid into the brew, which changed color once again as the
acid reacted with what was already in the mix.

From the shadows, Fancy continued to watch as Atoz continued his
spell. "Man, this guy must've taken lessons from Loiue," he whispered to
himself, and shook his head. He then quieted again as Atoz began to chant
the spell in an arcane language. Fancy leaned as close as he dared,
trying to make out the words being recited. <Maybe if I can figure out
what the Hell(tm) he's actually trying to cast, I can think of a way to
-stop- it...>

Brontes paused, his finger on the trigger of one of his guns as he
noticed that the continual attacks of the ninjas had temporarily stopped.
He took advantage of the breif lull to check on his ammo levels.
<Oh, -Hell(tm)-,> Brontes mentally grumbled to himself. <Running low
on them across the board. This is most definitely *not* my day.> He
tossed away a few of his empty guns, and made sure the rest were ready.
<Going to have to make sure my last rounds actually -count-...> Holding
one of his automatic rifles at the ready, he quietly resumed his search.
It didn't take Brontes that long to find another ninja. Oddly enough,
the ninja was standing in the middle of a clearing among the crates, not
doing much of anything. He certainly hadn't noticed the fact that a big
blue cyborg was sneaking up on him; in fact, he was currently facing away
from Brontes. Not being one to look a gift ninja in the mouth, Brontes
quietly raised his rifle, lining up a perfect shot.
It dawned on Brontes two seconds too late that the entire setup might
have been a trap. His suspicions were confirmed as ninjas jumped at him
from all sides, moving like the wind, and stripping him of his weapons and
undershorts.
*Vhwipp!* *Vhwipp!* *Vhwipp!* *Vhwipp!* *Vhwipp!* *Vhwipp!*
"Bwa?! HEY!! GIVE THOSE BACK!!!" Brontes yelled at a ninja who waved
his purloined silk daffy-duck boxers at him at a distance.
"You have more than your underwear to worry about, Blue one!" the
ninja leader taunted Brontes. His remaining warriors took up positions
around the cyborg, their weapons ready and poised for combat. "The
Tangled Octopus Clan shall most certainly destroy you, no matter what you
do! Take your precious boxers from us -- IF YOU CAN!"
Brontes considered the situation. <Fourty-two of them and only one of
me. They're armed to the teeth, and I've only got my wits and fists--->
Brontes slowly grinned as he cracked his knuckles. It was a very
disquieting grin, one which made the lead ninja wonder if this had been a
very good idea after all.
"Fine." Brontes took up a ready stance, ready for the upcoming
assault.
The ninjas lept into battle once again.

The lull and resumption of the battle between Brontes and the ninjas
had gone unnoticed by Louie and Cainu. The two were still locked in their
duel, exchanging curses while their blades sparked and sang out every time
they parried.
"I'll make a rump roast out of your legs! I'll deep-fry your arms!
I'll fill you with Stove-Top and cook you at 450 degrees for
Thanksgiving!" Louie taunted, now using two long carving knives (one
serrated, one straight). Unfortunately, he didn't quite have the reach to
make his threats a reality.
"Feh! The heathen chef dares to try and serve me up as a sunday
brunch?" Cainu replied with a smirk as he dodged back, his blade raised
for defense. "Know that Sesovucci Cainu will never yeild, and will never
submit to being prepared as a meal for lesser men!"
Louie's curiousity was piqued, even in the middle of the battle.
"What about for greater men?" he asked, pausing slightly.
"FOOL! You are unwise to lower your guard!" Cainu charged forward,
and gave Louie a vicious gash on his right arm.
"ARRGH!" Louie cried out, falling back, letting go of one of his
knives so he could hold the wound closed. He fell back, and Cainu pressed
forward, his blade flashing and slashing the air between them. Louie
barely managed to parry Cainu's blows with the knife in his remaining
hand.
At that point, another ninja ran up to Cainu's side. "Master Cainu,
Master Cainu! Our honorable leader requires your assistance!"
"Fool, can't you see that I am about to seize victory from this
uncouth culinary barbarian?" Cainu replied as he continued to press his
attack.
"But Master Cainu! The Clan is doing battle with the big blue one,
and URK!!" The ninja fell to the ground, dead, as Louie pulled out the
knife that had been meant for Cainu.
"You -heathen-! NEVER kill someone while I'm talking with them!!"
Cainu exclaimed, redoubling his attack. Louie eeped, and scuttled
backwards, barely managing to keep his limbs in one piece.

Meanwhile, Brontes was dealing with his opponents in his own
imtimitable fasion:
    *POUND!*
    *SMASH!*
    *IMBED!*
    *VIOLENCE!*
    *PUNCH!*
    *KRACK!*
    *SLAM!*
    *MORE VIOLENCE!*
    *IMPACT!*
    *PUNT!*
    *PASTE!*
    *GRATUITOUS VIOLENCE!*
    And so on.

Around and around the two combatants spun, Katana against Carving
Knife, and it was becoming painfully obvious to Louie that if something
didn't happen to tilt the odds in his favor soon, -he- would become the
main course meal.
"Hahhah! Your heathen tactics are no match for the skills of the
Greased Lightning of the Tangled Octopus Clan!" Cainu proclaimed as he
continued to slice and jab, his katana's blade cutting up Louie's white
chef outfit. He was also giving Louie an appreciable amount of cuts in
the process -- shallow ones, but they hurt as if lemon juice had been
poured into them. Louie winced, and continued to attempt to parry.
"AND NOW!" Cainu paused, striking a dramatic pose (and coincedentally
giving Louie a few moments to appreciate his glory). "I shall use my
ultimate technique!" Louie switched his knife from his right hand to his
left, and scrabbled in his pockets for -anything- he could use against the
ninja. "LIGHTNING GINSU ATTACK!"
Cainu shot forward, his blade blurring as he charged at the cyberchef.
Louie, at the same instant, raised his cyberarm in an attempt to block
Cainu's blade as he ducked beneath his reach. As the katana sliced and
sparked against Louie's metal arm, he shoved his right hand up (against
the protestiations of his right arm), and threw something into his face.
    Concentrated jalepeno powder.
"ARRGH! I-- I cannot see!" Cainu cried out in pain as he dropped his
blade. "You have -blinded- the Greased Lightning, the pride of the
Tangled Octopus Clan! Foul miscreant, I shall make you SUFFER for this!
I, Sesovucci Cainu, swear it!" Cainu staggered back and tried to clean
the irritating dust from his eyes, but his actions only served to worsen
the pain.
"Yeah, yeah," Louie muttered as he stood up again, punching the ninja
back. Cainu fell to the ground, and yelped. "Now, it's time for me to
get my just desserts," Louie said as he retreived his blades and grinned
an insane grin as he approached the now-helpless ninja. It would be so
easy...

Brontes dusted his hands off, looking over the carnage he had wrought.
All the ninjas who had attacked him were either dead or unconcious, and
the ones that were still capable of movement were trying futilely to get
their compatriots off the feild of battle. Brontes paid them no mind,
however, seeing as he was searching for something.
"Now, where were they... ah, here they are!" Brontes easily picked up
two unconcious ninjas and tossed them aside. They landed in a heap and
groaned, but the cyborg ignored the two ninjas as he retreived his boxer
shorts.
"MUCH better," Brontes grinned as he tucked his daffy-duck boxers into
one of his pants pockets. That task fulfilled, he set off to search for
his compatriots.
He didn't have to look far. Over in one area, he saw Louie going up
against a master swordsman, who had the upper hand until Louie through
something in his face. The ninja then fell to the ground in pain, giving
Louie time to recover. Louie retrieved his knives, and began to approach
his helpless victim.
It didn't take a PHD for Brontes to figure out what Louie was planning
to do. And, as much as part of the cyborg wouldn't have minded one less
ninja to worry about, he couldn't wait for Louie to properly prepare his
"ingredients". He sprinted, clearing the remaining distance within
seconds.
"Oh, no you don't..." Brontes muttered, and before Louie could realize
what was happening, he picked the ninja up and knocked him out with a
quick blow to the head.
"Hey!" Louie complained. "I was about to prepare our evening meal!"
"NO, Louie. No dismemberments," the cyborg growled as he dropped the
unconcious body of the ninja. "Restrain your blood lust and help me look
for Fancy." Grumbling, the cyberchef followed unwillingly.

Atoz continued to fuss over the cauldron, stirring the contents
occasionally as he executed another part of the spell. The next few
minutes were critical -- it was almost midnight, and the energy needed to
acheieve the effect he wanted was not quite ready. He added a few more
items, and was rewarded by a slight ionization of the air. <Good. Very
good,> Atoz smiled to himself. Before this night was out, he would have
what he wanted.
That is, if certain parties didn't interfere.
"Hold it right there!" Brontes exclaimed as he and Louie approached
the CEO. "I don't know what the Hell(tm) you think you're doing, but
whatever it is, we're going to take you down first!"
"I don't think so," Atoz smirked, and then laughed an evil laugh.
"Even now, the planets are in the correct alignment, and the components
have been prepared. There is nothing you can do to stop me. Before this
night is out, I'll be -above- your petty concerns." He added another
ingredient to the brew in the cauldron, and it began to bubble and froth,
sending a noxious trail of smoke about the room.
Brontes took a wiff of the smoke as it passed his nasal sensors, and
winced. "The stench has gone to your head, Atoz! You're -high-, Atoz!
You're frigging high!!"
"I am NOT high!!" Atoz pointed his finger at the cyborg, his arm
outstretched. "FULMINOS VENITE!" A lightning bolt shot from his finger,
and hit Brontes dead-on.
"GAH!!" Brontes fell back and hit the floor with a loud crash,
shocked (both figuatively and literally) as trace bits of electricity
arced over his metal body.
Fancy jumped from his hiding place, and he and Louie hurried over to
check their leader out and help him up. "... dammit, twice in one day...
ouchie..." Brontes muttered as he regarded his now-singed shirt.
"Never mind that now -- get DOWN!" Fancy yelled as he pulled the
cyborg and the chef out of the way of the bolts of lighting that Atoz was
sending towards them. They scrabbled for cover behind some boxes, using
the wood to sheild them.
"Never rains but it pours, eh boss?" Fancy said to Brontes by way of
greeting.
"Very... funny," Brontes grated as he tried to get his systems to
return to normal. "You damnwell better have an idea of what Atoz is doing
and how to stop it, or I'm going to be -very- pissed..."
Fancy gulped. "Actually, I've got NO clue what he's been planning to
do... I haven't been able to make out one -fourth- of what he's cast...
and you heard him yourselves, he's almost done."
"Great. Just... fucking... great..." Brontes muttered, and hit his
head against the back of one of the boxes they hid behind. "So, we're
going to die here as Atoz gets what he wants, is that what you're saying?"
"Not quite... you didn't give me a chance to finish," Fancy continued.
"See how the air around him is starting to be electrified?" the
illusionist explained as the three of them poked their heads above the box
they were hiding behind. They could see Atoz, the cauldron, and small
electrical arcs playing along the pipes and wires in the ceiling above
him, and other tiny sparks between the cauldron and the floor. Atoz
noticed them, sent another electrical bolt at them, and the Z-team ducked
down again.
    "Yeah, so?" Brontes growled.
"Sooo, I'd bet even money that whatever he's planning to do will use a
lot of energy, and most of it's already on its way here... but... if we
could somehow *short circuit* it..."
Brontes blinked, and then grinned as realization dawned on him.
"Gentlemen... I have a plan..."
"Oh boy," Fancy replied, but he was smiling all the same.

Atoz tossed some final ingredients into the bubbling caudron. The
boiling contents began to swirl, creating a mystical whirlpool of power
within the confines of the metal cauldron. He shot a glance at the
digital clock that was mounted on one stand. 11:58:33 PM. Just a minute
and 27 seconds to go until his goals were achieved, his years of planning
paid off. He could feel the energy build up around him. It was time.
With a smooth motion, he picked up the Clopman Diamond with his right
hand, and turned towards the cauldron once again. He raised his hand
high, the diamond glowing in the mystical light. 11:59:02 PM.
"And so it ends... and begins," Atoz whispered with a smile, and
opened his mouth to complete the spell.
"Quick, he's almost done with the incantation!" a voice called out.
Atoz blinked, and tossed a quick glance at the source of the voice.
He was rewarded with the sigh of Brontes standing up, a long cable in his
hands, one large object tied to one end, and one small object tied to the
other. The cyborg quickly began spinning the heavier end of the rope, and
released it, sending the impromptu bolo heading for mage and cauldron.
The lighter end quickly caught around Atoz's right arm, and the heavier
end fell into the cauldron's waters.
"Wha---?" Atoz managed to get out, looking up at his arm. A potato
masher, attached to a metal line, was wrapped around his forearm, below
his hand. The rest of the line went into the pool. Confused, he returned
his attention to the clock.
    12:00:00 AM.
    Midnight.

There was no more time to do anything. For a second, nothing appeared
to happen, but then the electrical arcs began to sprial about the ceiling,
building in strength as they centered on the cauldron below them. Beneath
the cauldron, energy began to build, crackling and twisting as they boiled
and electrified the contents within. The electricity began to travel up
the unexpected cable like a living creature, crawling for Atoz's arm. And
then, as if the wrath of God (or Elvis) was punishing Atoz for what he had
been about to do, a gigantic lightning bolt shot from the heavens,
shooting through the building destroying everything in its path, blasting
through the ceiling above him and striking the Clopman Diamond head-on.
There was a bright flash. And then...

                    **B**O**O**O**O**M**!**!**!**

Atoz screamed as the circuit was completed, the energy from the bolt
coursing through his body, taking the path of least resistance through the
Diamond, the potato masher, the cable, the cauldron, and himself. For a
very brief moment, his vision, his perceptions were filled with light.
    And then there was nothingness.

"This is Thomas Shepard, Channel Six News, reporting live from the
wreckage of the Atoz Corporation building in downtown DC, where Mr. Daniel
Atoz, CEO of the Atoz Corporation has been taken into custody for the
theft of the Clopman Diamond. The 'World's Largest Cut Diamond', as it
has been billed, was found in the unconscious man's possession in the
fourth subbasement of the building. The reasons for the destruction of
the building are unknown, though some police investigators believe
superguys and/or mages were involved." The reporter turned so that the
cameraman could get a good view of the area. The windows were all blown
out, and a good bit of debris was spread around the charred building.
The cameraman pivoted around as Shepard moved to one side, approaching
the police cars that were along one edge of the site. "Also, not only has
Atoz been arrested for Grand Theft, Diamond; but an anonymous tipoff to
the DC Police has implicated him in several cases of Grand Larceny,
Embezzelment, and Fraud with regards to his business practices. Since Mr.
Atoz is unavailable right now, we've decided to ask his assistant, Allen
Barnet, some questions instead." The reporter held his microphone out
towards the remarkably un-sooty major domo. "Mr. Barnet, do you have any
comments on these accusations?"
Barnet adjusted his glasses, and looked directly at Shepard. "In Mr.
Atoz's absence, the company's official reply on this entire affair is 'No
Comment'."
Shepard blinked. "Ah. So, there's no comments on any comments at
all?"
Barnet raised an eyebrow. "Indeed. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have
business to attend to."
"Um, yes, of course," the reporter replied, somewhat confused, as
Barnet nodded to him and departed. Looking about for something else to
cover, he saw several uniformed Army officers carrying a large, padlocked
metal box to an armored car, watched over by armed guards and a US
government official clad in a sharp three-piece suit and sunglasses.
"Excuse me, sir?" the reporter called out as he approached the
official. "I notice that the the Clopman Diamond is being taken into
custody by the Federal Government. Where is it being taken?"
The official turned, and regarded Shepard cooly. Behind him, the
armored car started up, and the guards boarded the truck before it could
drive off. "The Diamond is being taken into custody to ensure that no
harm will come to it, and will remain in our possession for some time."
Shepard watched as the armored truck departed the scene, and then he
and the cameraman returned their attentions to the official. "When can we
see the Diamond?"
"I thought I answered that. It's someplace very safe --"
"The Clopman Diamond is beleived to be a powerful force of nature,"
Shepard pressed. "Will further research be done --"
"Oh, it will be, Mr. Shepard, I assure you. We have top men working
on it right now."
"Who?" Shepard asked, sticking his microphone close to the official's
face.
The government official coldly looked back at the reporter, sunlight
reflecting off his sunglasses and into Shepard's eyes. "Top. Men," he
enunciated.
"I, um, see..." Shepard winced, blinded by the glare. He blinked his
his eyes to clear his vision, but by the time he was able to see again,
the suit had already left. Flustered, the reporter finished the interview
by himself. "Ahem. Well, there you have it. Atoz has been taken into
custody for the theft of the Clopman Diamond, and the US Government has
assured us that the diamond will be well cared for. This is Thomas
Shepard, reporting for Channel Six News."

Meanwhile, the armored truck carrying the Clopman Diamond drove away
from DC, heading deep into the Virginia mountains. At a certain point on
the two-lane highway, the truck made a left turn onto an unmarked dirt
road. It drove down this road for several miles, until it reached a
rustic wooden cabin in the middle of a clearing. The van drove straight
for the cabin, but before the van could apparently crash throuhg the
wooden porch and front wall, the porch railing retracted and the front
wall swung up and in, allowing the armored truck safe passage within. Once
inside, the vehicle came to a halt, and lowered into the ground thanks to
a hidden elevator in the middle of the cabin.
Once at the bottom of the elevator, the armored truck drove out into a
room deep within the earth, and stopped on an in-floor turntable. The
truck was turned around and releived of its cargo, and then drove back to
the elevator, which lifted it back to the surface. Meanwhile, the metal
box holding the Clopman Diamond was carried to a larger padded wooden
crate and placed inside. A wooden lid was lowered onto the crate and
solidly nailed shut, hiding the smaller box from view. On the top of the
crate, some words were stenciled, already painted in by an army seargent:

TOP SECRET ARMY INTEL. #9905764 DO NOT OPEN!

The large crate was lifted onto a dolly, and then was guided by a
little old government warehouseman into a gigantic underground warehouse.
The enormous room was filled with huge stacks of wooden crates arranged in
aisles, each crate much like the one that now held the Clopman Diamond.
The warehouseman pushed the crate down one such aisle, and was soon lost
from view.

At the same time, a few blocks away from the destroyed Atoz
Corporation building, a black Chevy GMC Van sat in a curbside parking
space, far away from the bright media lights. Quietly, blending in with
the rest of the morning pedestrians, two figures made their way
unobtrousively to the van, and knocked on its side door. The door slid
open, and the men stepped inside.
"How's it look out there?" Brontes asked as one of the men dropped
their magical disguise, revealing themselves to be Fancy and Louir.
"Man, we're talking a media -madhouse- out there," the mage smiled as
he pulled off his partial face mask. Louie moved to the back of the van
and hunched over, watching the news on a portable color TV. "CNN, TONN,
and about a dozen others fighting over this one little local station who
scooped 'em all bigtime." Frank chuckled.
"No hints we were involved?" the cyborg asked as Frank moved up to the
passenger side seat.
Frank made a waffling motion with his hand. "If Atoz talks, I doubt
they're gonna beleive him. And even if they do, the evidence is heavily
stacked against him regarding his involvement with the theft and property
damage."
"Not to mention we'll be very, VERY far away by the time of the
trial," Brontes smiled.
    "True."
"Speaking of evidence..." Brontes turned to look back at the
cyberchef, who had changed the channel to watch a repeat of "The Frugal
Gourmet". "...You guys -did- take care of the files we swiped from Atoz,
right?"
Frank nodded. "Left a floppy copy in the police station with
instructions on where to look to find more, and kept a copy for
safekeeping." Frank patted his shirt pocket. "Aaaand, while we had access
to Atoz's computers, Louie took care of any 'leftover' funds that he
happened to have lying around."
"What'd you do with the 'leftover' funds?" Brontes asked.
Frank shrugged. "Oh, I made a few donations," he explained.
    "... -Donations-?" Brontes rumbled warningly.
"Yeah, Donations. To the 'Illusionist's Appreciation Association',
the 'Kamakazi Catetori Society', and the 'Keep Brontes Happy Fund'."
The cyborg grinned, and clapped Frank on the back. "Good man."
Frank grinned back. "I figured you'd like them. So, what should we
do now?"
Brontes smiled as he pulled into traffic. "What every group of
mercenaries needs after a job such as this..."
"A VACATION!!" Brontes, Frank, and Louie chorused.
The trio laughed as the black Z-Team van drove off into the sunrise.

WHERE WILL THE Z-TEAM END UP NEXT?
WHAT WILL THEY DO WITH THE MONEY THAT THEY, *AHEM*, BORROWED FROM ATOZ?
HOW WILL DANIEL ATOZ FARE AT HIS TRIAL?
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO HIS COMPANY IN HIS ABSENCE?
WHAT ABOUT BARNET? HOW DID HE SURVIVE?
WILL WE EVER SEE THE CLOPMAN DIAMOND AGAIN?
WHAT ABOUT THE NINJAS?
AND WILL THE AUTHOR COMPLETE ANOTHER DECENT-SIZED STORY ARC WITHOUT
TAKING MORE THAN A YEAR TO DO SO?

I don't know all the answers to that, 'cause I'm only the narrator, but
YOU will.... but only if you read the next installment of ---

Author's note:

*WHEW!*

Finally, after [*count fingers, count toes*] 33 weeks, the first Z-Team
arc, "Diamonds Are Forever", is FINALLY complete!

Now, you may be wondering why it took this long to finish the arc. After
all, it's only been, what seven episodes, right? And the first episodes
came out every two weeks, so you'd think the rest would follow, right?
Welll... it's not quite that simple.

I started this in the middle of March, partially as a break from working
on Serendipity Three, and partially just to see if I could do something
episodic. Also, I'd been thinking of something that could be used in
Superguy; so, after some tweaking and reworkings, the Z-Team was born.

Unfortunately, as reality would have it, Life happened. I graduated from
College. I got a Job.

("And also, he procrastinated." ^_- )

... Thank you, Aeri.

("You're welcome." ^_- *giggle!*)

*Ahem* But anyway, after a lot of trials and tribulations, things
eventually stabilized to the point where I was about the seriously think
about writing again. So, here we are. The arc is complete, Serendipity 3
is picking up steam, and it's New Years Eve. If you're asking "Where's he
going from here?".... well, wouldn't -you- like to know? *grin*

("Don't worry... so would he." ^_- )

Aeri!!

(*Giggle!* ^_- )

But ANYWAY, in case you're worried about the Z-Team, well, don't you
worry. They'll be back. Oh yes, they'll be back. And in the interim,
they'll be causing as much chaos in the back of my mind as possible. :)

Oh, and before the ball drops, I'd like to thank everyone on #Eyrie,
Calvin, and the Complex for their eager support, especially James
"Mechaman" Rinehart, Chris "Frobozz" Angelini, and Matt Gerber for
cheerleading and critiquing.

And last, but certainly not least, I'd like to thank my Muse, Aerianne.

(*^_^*)

And so, without further ado....

                    HAPPY NEW YEAR, SUPERGUY!!!!!!!
