DOCUMENTATION

     1. Thanks to Walter Gillett (walter@mathworks.com), we now have
available on our anonymous ftp server, rhino.cis.vutbr.cz,
	the following document:

	     Directory: pub/lists/insoft-l/doc/unicode
	     File: hello.world

"Hello World or . . ." was written by Rob Pike and Ken Thompson.
Here's the abstract to their paper:

"Plan 9 from Bell Labs has recently been converted from ASCII to
an ASCII-compatible variant of Unicode, a 16-bit character set.
In this paper we explain the reasons for the change, describe the
character set and representation we chose, and present the
programming models and software changes that support the new text
format. Although we stopped short of full
internationalization--for example, system error messages are in
Unixese, not Japanese--we believe Plan 9 is the first system to
treat the representation of all major languages on a uniform,
equal footing throughout all its software."

This document is in Postscript format.

ADMINISTRIVIA

     1. I know how to get Jeff to produce a FAQ . . . have him tell the
entire INSOFT-L list that he work on a first version this
weekend, making it available on Monday, and if he doesn't come
through, he will have embarrassed himself before the entire world
	(wouldn't be the first time).
