The "California firm" is almost certainly Gamma Productions, and the
product is called UniVerse. It came out in early May. UniVerse already
supports right-to-left scripts (both Hebrew and Arabic), Latin-based
languages (from Afrikaans to Welsh, theoretically), Cyrillic, Greek,
and even Chinese and Japanese. It also apparently allows one to type
characters in top-to-bottom columns (which is required by classical
Chinese and Japanese). Unicode compliance is also claimed, though I
would be curious as to how this is done under MS-Windows.
I acquired the predecessor product, an MS-DOS-only product known as
Multi-Lingual Scholar, and found it quite useful. MLS has some
formatting features that are not yet present in UniVerse (UniVerse does
not yet support footnotes, for example). UniVerse also requires
MS-Windows version 3.1, which I do not have (though I may upgrade to it
soon).
Note: I have no connection with Gamma, except as a satisfied customer.
As anyone familiar with new packages will tell you: "It does not pay to
buy version 1.0 of anything!" Maybe someone who has bought UniVerse
could comment further?
