Is it still in it's infancy? Is it ready and available >for public consumption? Does this mean instead of using various >encodings per locale I would only need one? Unicode is still in its infancy in that while it has been endorsed by ISO (it's been merged into the standard ISO 10646) and most if not not all vendors plan to support it eventually, almost no current operating systems support it except for Windows NT, which has very little market presence. If you are targeting only the HP platform then I'd suggest sticking with the UNIX EUC encoding for now. X11R5 and Motif 1.2 don't support Unicode, so if you use Unicode internally you'll need to map into EUC anyway for calls to X. Unicode might have value for you right now if you need to support multiple locales simultaneously, in which case having a universal encoding becomes very helpful. It's also useful if you want to be portable to OS's other than UNIX, since EUC is UNIX-specific. Mapping tables and software utilities to translate between Unicode and other character sets are available via FTP from unicode.org and other sites. I recommend buying the Unicode tutorial announced earlier on this list, I found it to be very helpful. I'll reproduce the conclusion of that announcement: >Spiral bound, 207 pages. Price: $40.00 plus shipping and handling. >Please contact the Unicode Office Manager, Steven A. Greenfield, >at "unicode-inc@unicode.org" to order. -Walter ---- Walter E. Gillett walter@mathworks.com
