The synchrotron light sources all have technological applications.
The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory has its own WWW pages
which can be accessed from Argonne's pages at http://www.anl.gov.
The APS is a particle accelerator in which 6 GeV positrons circulate in a storage ring
until some are deflected into channels in which they are subjected to undulating magnetic fields.
The resulting synchrotron radiation can then be used for material science studies,
examination of lining cells, and many other specific applications.

Also, don't forget the importance of particle accelerators used in cancer treatment.
Some machines accelerate electrons to about 25 MeV, and either these particles themselves
or x-rays produced by impact of the electrons with metal foils are used to irradiate patients.
Articles on these machines can be found in the journal Medical Physics.
Also, if you can acquire meeting materials from the Radiological Society of North America,
which meets annually in conjunction with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine
at McCormick place in Chicago, there are always abstracts of papers, short courses,
and lists of exhibits on these subjects.

Good Luck!
