CoInitialize has not been called

When the application trys to instanciate the ADO Connection object a
EOleSysError exception occures with this message.

Project DFerret.exe raised exception class EOleSysError with message
'CoInitialize has not been called".  Process stopped. Use Step or Run to
continue.

Does anyone know what CoInitialize is and why I should be getting this
error.
