Hi, Jerri! I'm not positive this is any help, but you could try to ping the downed machine or use a SQL statement that could never fail. At that point you have to close the damaged connection and open a new one. As for the tnsnames.ora file, I believe that is a text file, and that you would need to parse it to extract the necessary information.
