Saving unmodified mail (raw content)

Hi,

how do I save the full email raw content to a string or a file? If I
retrieve the email with TIdPOP3 and call SaveToFile(), the mail will be
damaged, because some boundaries are replaced by the component. I want to
retrieve and save the mail to a file only.

Set the TIdMessage's NoDecode property to true before downloading, and the
NoEncode property to true before saving. Then the file will contain the raw
unedited content as-is.

Alternatively, use the TIdPOP3's RetreiveRaw() method, which stores the
downloaded content into a TStrings. Pass in a TStringList and use its
SaveToFile() method.

Thank you. And how do I do that with TIdIMAP4?

I don't believe you can do the same with TIdIMAP4. It doesn't support the same
methods, IIRC. I may be wrong though.

The same way that I mentioned earlier - set the TIdMessage's NoDecode
property to true before downloading, and the NoEncode property to true
before saving it to file. There are no methods in TIdIMAP4 to retreive the
raw data into a TStrings (or other container).

Sorry. I have a problem with TIdIMAP4 again. If I set TIdMessage's NoDecode
to true, I get no answer but this error: "Read Timout.". Tested with 3
different servers - the same error! Example code:

    String UID = "3";
    TIdMessage *IMAPRaw = new TIdMessage(this);
    IMAPRaw->NoDecode = true;
    IMAPRaw->NoEncode = true;
    IdIMAP4->UIDRetrieve(UID, IMAPRaw);
    TStringStream *RawMsg = new TStringStream(NULL);
    IMAPRaw->SaveToStream(RawMsg, false);
    Memo1->Text = RawMsg->DataString;
    delete RawMsg;
    delete IMAPRaw;

No problems if NoDecode is false.. but I need the raw message. Can you help
me again, please?

You'll have to take the issue up with Indy's other developers directly. I
did not write TIdIMAP4. There is an IMAP4 newsgroup on Indy's own
newsserver - news://news.atozed.com.

Hmm.. It seems there are only few people who read there (but I will try to
ask). I think this could be a bug in TIdIMAP4 (or TIdMessage ??).

Nobody of the other developers could help me.. That is really very very
unfortunate.

Who did you talk to? Ciaran? He's the one who actualy works on TIdIMAP4,
and would be the best one to know what is happening and how to fix it.

Yes, he replied me.

Ehmm... maybe... or not. His answer was, that TIdIMAP4 seems to work in
Indy10. But he mentioned no solution for Indy9.

Ciaran's reply:

"Indy 9 can only retrieve complete messages from servers that send out
an email terminator CRLF.CRLF at the end of the message (I think there
is a comment to this effect at the start of later TIdIMAP4.pas
versions). Some servers do not do this, and Indy 9 can hang waiting
for the CRLF.CRLF.

Indy 10 uses a different mechanism for retrieving, that uses a
byte-count field, which seems to work with all servers. Indy 10's
TIdIMAP4 is significantly better than Indy 9, particularly with servers
whose "unsolicited responses" cannot be turned off (these are typically
updates of the status of the current mailbox). Some others have got
Indy 10 working on CBuilder6 but you may need to check the other
newsgroups here to find out how."
