Just try to create a file with the name "fred.doc:test". If you succeed it can't be a FAT volume. This is because the name includes a named stream and FAT doesn't support them. If you want to try to examine the file system you can open it using the path "\\.\C:" then read the boot sector. Unfortunately hard though it is to believe boot sectors on their own are not enough. What /I'd/ do is use the boot sector to attempt to locate the Master File Table - but then our DLL can give me that functionality with three calls :) There probably is a better way to determine file system type if you dig around enough.
