Thanks fellas.

Wow, this is a bit more complicated than I anticipated. I was just looking
for a unique number on the machine that my program would crossreference
against it's own internal number to see if the program has been pirated. I'm
still a bit new to all this. :)

Thanks for the food for thought. I'll look into the groups as you
suggested...

Rob

You didn't indicate the ultimate objective. Typically this is copy
protection or license control. And you also didn't indicate whether
it has to be durable through customer OS reinstalls, upgrades, and so
on. You might also reflect on the fact that Microsoft originally
created a GUID in MS Office without telling the users, and embedded it
invisibly in every document (not just the owner's Registry) they
created. Blessedly, they were forced to terminate this plan, and
actually released "GUID-removal" tools.

I'm in no way opposing your (I presume...) need to protect
intellectual property. But it's much, much harder than this, and
often irritating to users. Many posters have described striking a
balance between protection and irritation. You might wish to search
these groups (or others) for messages on "Copy protection" or "Unique
ID" in the hope of finding something useful.
