You are not initializing your variable to 0 beforehand. If the lock fails, your variable is potentially containing a random value from memory. Also, there really are some events that are that high in value to begin with (for example, SHCNE_ASSOCCHANGED is 0x08000000 aka 134,217,728). You did specify SHCNE_ALLEVENTS when calling SHChangeNotifyRegister(), afterall. Gambit
