Then I suggest that you look at what magnify.exe uses.  You can capture a
list of what functions it imports with a set of commands like this:

  tdump -em \winnt\system32\magnify.exe >info.txt
  tdump -em \winnt\system32\mag_hook.dll >>info.txt

You'll see some MFC stuff which I don't think is too important for
understanding what it does and a bunch of Windows calls which are important.

Just guessing from the list my guess is that the program installs system
wide hooks to capture what is going on, uses a memory mapped file to
communicate between the program and the hook DLL, sets up a different
desktop and then shows its own desktop on which the original desktop is
shown with the magnifier's window superimposed over it.

This is a challenging task, one which upon completion will leave you with a
detailed knowledge of how to get things done under Windows.  I hope you have
