In ASCII, ISO-8859-1 and Codepage 850, the question mark character is encoded as \x3F (63 decimal). In Codepage 850, \xDC is the code for the "LOWER HALF BLOCK" character; in ISO-8859-1, it is the code for � (capital u umlaut); is this what you mean when you write "this is what i receive: U"?
