Hi Nicholas Have a look at TimeSetEvent in the W32 help. This may help you out. I have used Bob Gondors method of the dummy characters on a communications polling controller. Set up a buffer with the required commands and space with dummy characters and send with WriteFiles to the port. This buffer can be made large enough to give your application plenty of time the refill the buffer when required. You will need to tweak the timeouts so the character are not buffered by the device driver. (Be carefull with USB based ports as they seem to have a mind of their own.) This method was used on a tracking system capable of handling 1000's of vehicles a second from 100's of data channels with almost no cpu overhead. The mother of all muli-port serial cards!!! Remember windows is not a real time os and will delay randomly, perform badly when the moon's phase is incorrect, raise and lower the comport handshake lines and send AT commands as part of PNP to find modems. Be carefull what you have attached to the com ports. Large rotating machinary is not recommended without hardware interlocks and watchdogs. deadpoint dave
