This question seems to be more appropriate for internet.socket newsgroup 
so I've set a follow-up to it.

Yes, this is the only standard way.
There's WebDAV protocol available, which might support directory 
listings. WebDAV is an extension of HTTP protocol, however by default it 
is not supported by web servers.

If you explain your needs in more details, some other solution might be 
possible.
