Notice anything peculiar about those values?  They're both doing the exactly
same thing.  Isn't one supposed to be the reverse of the other?  I would
think that one of them should be using '++' instead of '--'.

You have not shown enough code to reproduce the problem with.  How are you
actually using the 'mag' value in your actual drawing code?  Your probelm is
most likely there instead, not in your keyboard handling.
