We have in our program in import function which imports data into our
data file. We have a main file and several index files. Inserting a new 
record requires several read and write operations on several files.

For a customer we have to import two files. Both files have the same 
format. The strange thing which happens is while importing the first 
file goes at normal speed (about 400 records per second) the second file
goes very slow (about 1 record per second).

When the two files are appended so we get one big file the whole file is 
imported at normal speed. Reversing the order of the two files has no 
effect. Restarting the program between the two files or even rebooting 
doesn't help either.

Actually there are both record which must be updated and records which 
must be inserted. Only the inserting is affected.

The main file grows in the process from about 42 MB to about 50 MB.

The problem occurs both on Windows 2000 and Windows 98SE.

Unfortunatly its impossible for me to give a small example program. 
However I would like to get suggestions on the possible cause of this 
problem.
