My HTML editor is Notepad.exe and all pages were done manually (well, I wrote a program to do the time tags at the bottom and another to remove the 'avoid search engine robots" meta tag: <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"> from the pages on RoadRunner (that meta-tag is still in the pages at http://users.deltacomm.com/edmulroy mirror because bandwidth is an issue there). The site has been building for a long time - I started it in '96 (although it was on Compuserve back then). It's really a clone of what is on my machine and is on the web so that I can use the same environment even if on the road and accessing form Kinko's or the library or something. It's grown over time - I add a link when I visit it and it seems I might visit it again later. It started with maybe 4 pages and now has 53 pages. Moving to using a style sheet brought it down from 800+K to about 670K. > How do you handle broken links? For example > http://www.designmadeingermany.de/dmiq/ (in "interestingly > designed sites") was broken when I tried. Oh no!! I liked that site and was at it just recently and had not yet learned all of how he did it. I just checked and yes, it's offline. I'll remove the link. Check out the "Discovering Montana" site. It may not blow you away visually, but it's a typical table-designed site yet there is but one table - almost all of it is done with CSS. I use another site to check for broken links (the link is on the html.htm page). http://www.fixingyourwebsite.com/drhtml.html and periodically click links manually to check (not all links that go away throw a 404 error - some get grabbed by another site). > By the way, would you consider adding http://www.wotsit.org > in the "file formats" section or is it out of topic? That is the 2nd link under File Formats on prog5.htm with the unhelpful title of "File Formats" :-( I'll change the title of the link to "File Formats @ wotsit.org" I want to keep the name starting with the 'F' to keep it up in the list (entries are alphabetical by title). That change is now on the server - all of html.htm, prog5.htm and medical.htm were changed (the site gets updated frequently, I'm working on having enough discipline to only update it once per day). > I guess there are a million ways for constructing a directory > like site. Yours, carries an original format which is fine with me. Very polite - have you considered a career as a diplomat? :-) The "original format" is because I don't know any better. Rudy Velthuis suggested a change to 2 colums of data with a menu and I did that. You can see what the site used to look like in 2000 (without the background gif) if you go to the Internet Archive (WayBackMachine) at http://www.archive.org and look for this: http://users.deltacomm.com/edmulroy If you have any suggestions, constructive criticisms or even lethal barbs about the site, please feel free to fire them at me. .
