sounds like that or a memory over run...
if you have codeguard (bcb5)
and Mayber earlier
then you can use that to have it catch errors of this nature

you can be accessing memory you have deleted
or copying 500 bytes into 400 allocated or any number of things
of this nature...
can be tricky to track down with out codegaurd...

and it may not show up in same place all the time
had it happen to me
