The machine I'm testing it on (which takes even longer to conntect -
about 15 minutes!!) has a single processor:

AMD Athlon(tm)XP 1800+
1.50 GHz
224 MB of RAM

What does "hyperthreading" mean?

You're probably right about that, but the thing is, I'm not even
asking IB to do anything yet. It is the process of connecting that
is taking so long. Once connected, IB runs fine and executes queries
at a reasonable speed. What could be the reason for this initial
delay? What does IB do on connect that takes so long?
