Being very picky here, compareTo is specified to return less than zero, 
zero, or greater than zero.  The specific value returned is an 
implementation detail.  So, that would be better written as:

    if (string1.compareTo(string2) < 0)
    if (string1.compareTo(string2) == 0)
    if (string1.compareTo(string2) > 0)
