Is it possible the issue has to do with when the instance variable is initialize. Instance variables get initialized after the object is created. Is it not true, the object is not created until after the constructor has executed. Therefore, it is necessary the variable wiil be valued "def", because the is the first line of code executed after the object is created, after the constructor has executed.
