The current Image I/O APIs, iirc, don't do bitmaps, however checkout
http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/javatips/jw-javatip60.html
for code to do them yourself, or,
http://www.geocities.com/marcoschmidt.geo/java-image-coding.html
for some people that have done it for you...
