try www.serialio.com for a commercial replacement.

try www.rxtx.com for an open source replacement.

Both of these are cross-platform, Windows, Linux, Unix, ....

Sun claims to have updated their distribution, but it is still (for Windows) the same stuff.

I had bad results with Sun javax.comm when I went to Java 1.2. And worse results on Win95-98. The serialio JavaSerialPort implementation handled both well.
It also includes an adapter .jar, so the program can use javax.comm classes. Cost is reasonable, about $50 for a single platform.
