Filtering rows in a TableModel

I have the need in an application I'm writing to provide multiple views of a
single, large List.

The way to do it would probably be to have some kind of automatic filtering
list, which could provide a window onto an existing list for all elements
satisfying a certain condition. Problem is I can't figure out how. I just
spent an hour tearing my hair out trying to solve this one.

Or maybe there's a way to do it further up. This List is being encased in a
TableModel for rendering as a JList, so maybe it's possible to set a
filtering attribute on the TableModel to restrict the elements it shows. I
don't know... help!
