Jennifer's idea is actually ingenious!  It works!  Here it is in short (all
credit goes to Jennifer):

To visually design a JFrame in JBuilder 1.01 (or 1.0), you need to add the
following line in the component initialization section (next to all the
"BevelPanel bevelPanel1 = new BevelPanel()" lines):

Container container = getContentPane();

In the visual designer, a 'container' will show up in the component tree under
the UI node.  Add things to it instead of the 'this'.
