Depending on how soon you need the functionality, yoou may want to save
yourself the effort: Swing components do have ToolTips.

Well that certainly is news to me! Can you/someone please point me to
this paper? An admittedly superficial search at the JavaSoft site only
brought up (as expected) reasons against including MI. Personally, I
agree.
