Does it have to be set to 42L value as demonstrated here:

I got an java.lang.ClassCastException: demoapp.jb.OsebaJB exception when 
returning array of JavaBeans from my session EJB.

The value is entirely up to you.  The class cast exception you're seeing 
likely has nothing to do with serialization and more to do with EJB object 
management.  We'd have to see the stack trace to fully understand the 
problem.
