I just downloaded and started using Java 6 and all I can say is WOW!! While many enhancements are geared toward Web Development (intergration with Scripting languages like JavaScript), the speed differences between 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 are simply AMAZING!! Full IDEs that used to drag are now FLYING!! NetBeans 5.5 is seriously starting to run near NATIVE SPEED. We have to use Oracle JDeveloper at work. JDeveloper used to be a dragging butt dog on 1.5, but on 1.6, it is actually usable! I plan to do a test with JB2006 and JB2007 with JDK 1.6 soon. Will keep you posted. If you doubt the speed, simply download the jre/jdk. Run any of your current SWING apps that support 1.5 or even 1.5 (most of the apps I have that run on 1.4/1.5 run seamlessly in 1.6). See for yourself. Try Squirrel SQL for a comparison, if you do not want to risk an IDE. This brings SWING apps very much back into the picture. They are now running near native speed on modern processors and are a true option to native applications.

I'm looking forward to it myself. DaveO told me something similar back
before Christmas.
Now if Apple would just get their version officially released...

With the exception of JB2006, every other app I have tried that is 1.5 compatible, seems to work with 1.6. The same Open Tools problem witht he Prime time IDE. Still trying work arounds on Linux.

What "Open Tools problem" are you referring to?

Save time, search the archives:

Is it in Joi Ellis's Faq-O-Matic?

Finally, please send responses to the newsgroup only.
That means, do not send email directly to me.
Thank you.

I managed to pass these errors by moving all FIX JARS provided with JBuilder. Open JBuilder.config file. There is a set of addbootpath lines where fix jars are provided for different pars of the JDK. Of course there is many other error messages displayed in the console but at least IDE becomes visible. For example projects that contain Enterprise modules can't be open. There is some Abstract error messages. If CodeGear can provide us with updated IDE that can run on top of JDK 1.6 this will be great. I'm sure the speed improvement in some situations will be above 10%. I think he means to remove/move from from JBuilder. A lot of those
"fix" jars are specific bug fixes for the JDK itself. It makes sense to
remove them when updating your JDK. Maybe just remove one at a time,
and see what happens for each one.

Some of these "fixes" contain base Swing classes which refer to specific for 1.5 com.sun.* classes or properties. Because of that when starting JBuilder there is lots of NoSuchClass exceptions.
