I am very new to this and just wanted to get a few things cleared up. 1/ If I want my applet to work on the Web must I limit my self to Swing controls ? 2/ When adding swing controls to a class or applet they don't seem to place themselves where they have been dropped eg in the middle of the frame. They do odd things like stick themselves to edge or top of the frame. How can I stop this? Regards, Rob

You can use any controls you like, but mixing AWT (heavyweight)
controls, and Swing (lightweight) controls is a mistake. Stick with one
or the other, preferably Swing.
This is a good place to start, to learn about Swing:

You need to learn about layout managers. You've probably got a
BorderLayout happening there.

I should explain that I am using a 30 day trial of JBuilder 2005 and an old copy of JBuilder 2 that came with an old copy of Delphi. The springlayout does not appear to be available in JBuilder 2006 I did try dragging and dropping the controls in the Jpanel and the Jtabbed pane. Nothing behaved the way I expected. What I would like to understand is that option buttons, text boxes have been available since Jbuilder 2 - how did anybody use them ?

Like Lori stated, you will have to learn to use Layout managers. Either that or use the newer Matisse GUI Layout. It is not available in JB 2-2006. I am not sure whether 2007 has it or not (I do not have my copy yet). Tools that do have it include NetBeans 5.5 and myEclipse. Matisse allows you to do Drag and Drog GUIs that automate the Layout Manager positions for you. This means it works more like the RAD tools for Windows, Delphi, BCB, Visual Basic. Using JB 2006, you will need to learn what layout managers are and how to use them. JB is not Delphi and Java is not Delphi! :)

XY is a prototype layout period. It does not translate well to different Video setups and will almost NEVER work when moving from one OS to another. Maltisse on the other hand, will create the Layout for you. It does not use the XYLayout type structure. It builds the layout behind the scenes, so that you can concentrate on the RAD benefits of your layout paradigm. It works reasonably well with different Video setups and XPlatform. I have had to do some tweaking, but not major tweaking, using Maltisse. > > > No shit Sherlock Please refrain from using such language. I understand the context, but the language is against NG rules.
