Would it be ok if we paid for them the same way we pay for roads now: through sales and income and property tax? I wouldn't object to paying a bike registration fee that went toward maintenance, policing and other costs provided it was proportional to the damage my bike did to the roads. >I like bicycles. I even have one. But I'd >like to keep my car, too, if that's OK with you. >-- Nobody wants to take your car away. All I want is to stop paying taxes so that everyone -- me included -- gets to drive for cheap. Lots of SOVs running about at random is an extremely inefficient way to move large numbers of people, and it seems to follow that if inefficient it also ought to be more expensive. I'd still use a car for family vacations and the like even if I were paying my own way. (BTW, I recently attended a presentation by someone from Transportation Alternatives in NYC where the claim was made that in Manhattan gas would have to be taxed up to $10/gallon before autos began to pay their own way. This is primarily because of the high cost of the land on which parking structures and such are built: the figure for the whole of New York State was more on the order of $4/gallon. He promised to send the numbers to me when they're complete, at which time I'll post them here and we can play yet another round of "how much is that subsidy." -- **************************************************************************** Eric House "My employer doesn't share its opinions with me, so I can share only mine with you"
