DEADLY RADIOACTIVE WASTE DUMP *** URGENT ACTION NEEDED *** The state of California is proposing to dump deadly radioactive waste in our California desert. The site, 18 miles west of Needles, California and 18 miles west of the Colorado River, will soon become the dumping ground for our nation's "low level" radio active waste. 18 states have already expressed interest in dumping on California. "Low level" radioactive waste is not low risk. This deadly waste will be dumped into unlined trenches 600 feet above a pristine underground lake nearly the size of Lake Tahoe. In drought-plagued California, any threat to surface or underground water sources is unacceptable. The state of California has chosen a private firm, U.S. Ecology, to build and operate the $30 million dump. U.S. Ecology constructed the radioactive waste dumps at Sheffield, Illinois and Maxey Flat, Kentucky. Both these dumps are leaking and have had to be closed. At Maxey Flats, deadly plutonium has leaked into the soil. There is no known technology capable of removing plutonium from the soil, and the site will have to be monitored forever - at taxpayer's expense. Concerned citizens throughout the state are joining forces to prevent California from becoming a national radioactive waste dump. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Unless Californians act now, they will bear the financial responsibility and the environmental and health risks for the dump when it leaks. Write today and ask for a response. There is no time to waste. SAMPLE LETTER: Governor Pete Wilson State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 Dear Governor Wilson: As a resident of California, I request that you take immediate action to prevent the dumping of deadly radioactive waste in our state. All dumps eventually leak, and the citizens of the state simply cannot afford the financial, environmental and health risks of this dump. There is no way to safely dispose of this deadly waste, and there is no technology that can cleanup radioactive pollution. We should not serve as the dumping ground for the nuclear industry's waste. I request a response to this letter as soon as possible. Stop the Needles dump now. Sincerely, Your name Your address * Origin: oNE woRLD Los Angeles 310/3720987 (1:102/129)
