NATIONAL LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, or
"Earth Summit" which will take place in Rio this June has the potential
to be the most significant international conference that has ever
occurred. The United Nations has invited heads of state from every
country to attend, for the purpose of creating treaties and agreements
to protect the world's environment.
In the negotiations to date, the Untied States has been blocking
progress on more issues than any other country. President Bush has
made no mention of even attending the conference.
To shift our country's position to one of global stewardship, the
White House needs to hear from you. Please take a few minutes now to
send a letter to President Bush, asking him to take responsible action
in the negotiations and conference to protect our environment for
present and future generations. You can write your own letter or use
the letter below, as well as pass it on to friends.
President George Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Bush,
I am very concerned about the lack of commitment of our government
in supporting environmental sustainability in the negotiations for the
United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. We need an
international treaty to protect our atmosphere from global warming by
curbing carbon dioxide emissions 20% from 1988 levels by the year
2000; we need to preserve our old growth forests in this country and
therefore be in a position to ask other countries to protect their
forests; and we need to change our industrial practices to minimize
waste and toxins that pollute our oceans and fresh water.
Please demonstrate that you truly are the "Environmental President"
you claimed you were by supporting meaningful environmental agreements,
attending the Rio conference and personally signing these treaties
critical to the preservation of our mutual planetary home. No other
issue will matter if our Earth can no longer sustain life.
Thank you for taking leadership to change our direction while there
is still time to so.
Sincerely,
