Real Goods is a good source for all sorts of "products for energy
independence," including compact (electronic ballast) fluorescents,
solar systems of all sorts, rechargable batteries, composting toilets,
a large selection of 12 volt appliances and other goodies, etc.

Compact fluorescents are not cheap -- but Real Goods calculates that
over its life, a single compact fluorescent bulb will save more than
$50 in utility bills, and keep one ton of carbon dioxide and twenty
pounds of sulfur oxides out of the air.

The problem with fluorescents for me is that they buzz. I found
the Stanford maintenance people unhelpful about this. "Oh, that's
not enough buzz to bother anyone." The underlying message is that
saving energy is more important. One thing that buzzed was a replacement
for an incandescent bulb. Does anyone know if this problem is
now solvable? If not, I and many others will stick with incandescents
until it is.
