I live in an semi-rural area of LA county outside the city limits 
where people typically drain washwater directly onto/into the 
ground.  (Don't know if it's really legal though.) Anyways, I do 
use biodegradable soap and channel washing machine runoff to a 
flower bed.  I don't grow vegetables in that area, however, for 
fear of the occaisional toxic household and automotive chemicals 
that get washed out of clothing and rags.  Even the accumulation 
of synthetic fibers would disuade me from growing things to eat 
there.  (That may seem trivial, but consider it next time you 
clean your dryer's lint trap.) 

The folks over in rec.gardens may have some insight regarding the
pros and cons of these issues.  (Note the cross-posting; please
edit as appropriate.)
