They're working on using kenaf, an African plant, to produce paper.
 A step forward, perhaps, but I agree that it's rather silly when
  we have a native plant, hemp (marijuana), that as far as I can
   tell has all the same benefits as kenaf.

Extensive knowledge of the benefits and uses of plants all over
 the world is being ignored because of drug taboos.  It is common
  for a shaman or medicine wo/man to ingest a hallucinatory plant
   in order to learn things about plants' properties, and just as
    common for Westerners to completely disregard what a shaman
     has learned.

The destruction of the rainforest carries with it the genocide of
 the people living in the rainforest, and with them the people who
  know the most about the flora being destroyed.
