The basic exterior differences between the old Government model 1911 and the
gold cup is witnessed by a flat uncheckered mainspring housing, a finger
relief is not provided in the military model on the right hand side as
occurred with the 1911A1. The 1911A1 adopted in the 30's to make soldiers
more able to shoot accurately, the mainspring housing was arched, a finger
grouve was cut into the right side of the frame, the trigger was shortned;
unfortunately the 1911 was looked upon a s a brick inwhich to throw at any
enemy unless you were within 7 feet. Both guns used very low sights which
made the firearm inherently inacurate, proper sights greatly improve this
firearm's capability. The modern changes make the 1911 and its clones can be
witnessed by looking at the Kimber and all the models currently being
offered from the entry grade to their super match models. This is largely
the 1911 pattern although custom options can make up the 1911A1 pattern as
well. Colt currently offers for sale, if you can find one, a Colt 1911A1 but
be prepared to buy it out of California. Colt has no intention of ever doing
business again in the state unless it is class 3 (M-16) business with law
enforcement.

The NRA has a website which has publications on the Browning designed 1911
Colt and 1911A1 service pistol as manufactured by Colt, Singer, Remington,
Union Swithch and Signal and others for WW II.

A professionally manufactured or reworked 1911 (using a generic term) matfch
pistol will group within the 9 ring of the NRA bullseye target at 50 feet
using match grade ammunition. Best target pistols currently to look at are
Colt Gold Cup, Kimber and if you have deep pockets and want an IPSC or
combat pistol; Les Baer and Wilson, in order of preference. In these
categories the term combat pistol are used as they are quite serviceable for
military applications, far more accurate than the Beretta 92F with almost
twice the knockdown power when using 45 plus P loads in an IPSC or Combat
Pistol.

Hope this helps
