March 22 Neal Knox Update -- Today's copycat shooting at the
huge Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, only five miles from
Santana High, ended with no lives lost, Thank God.
The 18-year-old shooter, reportedly a graduate last year, was
armed with a far deadlier shotgun, but opened fire at enough
distance that the birdshot -- surely not the reported buckshot --
only sent one boy to the hospital and wounded three students and a
teacher, either with shot or broken glass.
He was quickly stopped because he was shot twice by a police
officer, but will survive -- probably unfortunately, for his death might
have
sobered up some of these cowardly attackers.
----------------
The anti-gun crowd has made the astonishing discovery that
anyone willing to violate the law by making and presenting false
identification, and perjuring himself on a Federal Form 4473, can
buy a gun illegally.
Yesterday Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Carolyn McCarthy
(D-N.Y.) released a General Accounting Office study proving that
anyone willing to violate Federal and state laws can evade the NICS
background check and obtain a gun. We've been trying to tell them.
Gun laws only work if the laws are obeyed; criminals break the
law, which is why they're called criminals. But the antis can't
get that through their heads, and claim to believe the next law
will do what all the others have failed to accomplish.
Many years ago I helped pass an NRA Board resolution that, had
it been pursued and enacted into law, would have saved the hundreds
of millions spent on the National Instant Check System, would have
achieved much of what the backers of NICS claimed they wanted, and
solved many other problems related to false identification. It
called for requiring drivers' licenses to be more difficult to
fake, and issuing them only after a criminal background check.
Anyone found to have a felony record, which could have been
coded on the driving license, would have been prohibited from
buying a firearm from a dealer, prohibited from voting, and many
other laws which can be evaded by false identification.
Such a driver's license bill, providing for an "F" to show up
when hit by a police officer's special light, and requiring the
license to be displayed before an officer approached a stopped car,
passed one house in both Georgia and Alabama.
Lawmakers who think criminals are too stupid to evade gun laws
might consider the recent TV report of an imprisoned rapist,
convicted on the basis of DNA evidence, who attempted to discredit
the evidence by mailing his mother a sample of his semen, which was
smeared on the inner thighs and underwear of a woman who had been
hired to claim she was raped -- while he was in prison.
---------------------
The Senate is winding up the first week of debate on the
McCain-Feingold campaign finance "reform" bill, which would
unconstitutionally trash the ability of anyone except the news
media to report a candidate's prior votes or positions on gun laws
and other issues. Not surprisingly, the media loves it.
One hot debate item is that 140 individuals and organizations
contributed more than $1 million to political parties in the last
election (which includes almost $1.5 million contributed to the
Republican party by the NRA Political Victory Fund, some of which
was undoubtedly used to support anti-gun Republicans -- which is
why on my watch the NRA-PVF never contributed to political
parties).
If anything passes it will probably eliminate the limitations
on political ads and independent expenditure campaigns, for almost
everyone opposes those provisions except the politicians who want
to keep their records a secret.
--------------
There may have been bribery of anti-gun witnesses in the halls
of the Texas State Capitol Tuesday after a committee hearing on a
string of gun bills. A witness for the Million Moms March was
reportedly videotaped by conservative talk show host Alex Jones
giving money to gang members who had testified for the gun laws --
demanding that they be given guns to protect themselves against
white racists.
Some pro-gun legislators are investigating. Ed Hohmann has
described the event (I don't know how accurately), and has
streaming tape of Jones' video at http://www.infowars.com/payoff.html.
I've read his story but haven't been able to view the tape.
--------------------
New Hampshire isn't a likely spot for anti-gun legislation but
a sack full of bills are under consideration, including one to
raise the age for a carry license to 21.
Ex-policeman and firearms training expert Massad Ayoob told
the committee about his 19-year-old daughter avoiding an assault by
two men merely by showing that she had a licensed gun.
-------------------
Citing the Santana shooting, the Los Angeles City Council
yesterday passed a ban on sale of so-called "pocket rockets" -- the
small, powerful easily concealed 10-shot semi-autos designed by
Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Charles Schumer when they squeezed
magazine capacity to 10 rounds.
Purchasers of other handguns would have to provide a
thumbprint.
---------------------
The New York State Rifle and Pistol Assn board has formally
endorsed the "Untainted Elections" NRA bylaw amendment, but a
majority opposed the State Director bylaw on the grounds that one
year terms aren't long enough for directors to accomplish anything
-- which is undoubtedly true, but a director attempting to do what
his constituents want would easily be reelected.
I have been told that NRA state associations in Missouri,
Kansas, and Nevada have endorsed both bylaws, as has Georgia.
About 90 percent of NRA ballots are never cast. They're in
the March magazines, Talk to your friends and club members to be
sure they don't waste their ballots.
