Warning to anyone who is planning to buy/or has bought a Canon BJC-240EX
printer in CANADA!
(please excuse this repost, yet somehow my previous one was toasted).
The canon web sites, listed below, all mention that the BJC240 AND
BJC204EX
printers (and not the BJC-204L) come with the 'Canon Creative 2'
software.
To my surprise, after buying the printer, I found no 'Canon Creative 2'
software
in the box.
This 'story' is simply a warning to anyone about to buy the Canon
BJC-240EX
printer and expects to get the 'Canon Creative Software 2' with it,
which is CLEARLY described on the web pages. I tried to contact various
factions at Canon, yet they all claim that the web pages only apply to
printers
bought in the US and not in Canada (where I got mine)! No where on these
web pages does it mention geographical boundaries for the specifications
for these printers!
Now, I know this 'Canon Creative Software 2' isn't worth much, yet I
have
proceeded thus far since I based my purchase on specifications I read
off
the Canon web pages which also mention the free software. I don't think
that they can get away with lying about one thing and telling the truth
about another. Basically, I want an apology and an offer to all people
who purchased the BJC-204EX printer (in Canada) to get a free copy of
the software. This is how a RESPONSIBLE company handles making a mistake
and saving face, which Canon (among Intel, and other) seem to not be
good
at!
Here are the web pages which clearly indicate that the BJC-204EX (photo
option of the BJC-240) printer comes with the 'Canon Creative Software
2':

Please read on if you are interested in the details of my adventure in
trying
to get an answer from Canon, or if you want to get the phone
numbers/names
of contacts at Canon Canada, with which to call if you have bought a
BJC-240EX
in Canada and want to get the software as well!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The story...
I called the store where I bought the printer, Future Shop (Ottawa,
Ontario,
Canada). A really rude sales person replied to my question of why I
didn't
get the software, 'that it is a Canon thing,' he would not help me out
at
all. I asked to speak to his manager, who later did call Canon, yet was
not
able to get any answers from them.
So I called Canon's toll free tech support line, which by the way I have
say
is one of the best, and friendliest, that I have ever dealt with. I
spoke to
Rose, who told me that only the BJC (plain) printer was supposed to come
with
the software, not the BJC-240EX (which BTW is more expensive as it comes
with a photo printing kit). She then asked me for the URLs of the pages
which
mention that the software comes with the BJC-204EX, which I gladly gave
her.
The next thing I know Rose calls back and asks me to fax in the web
pages,
for the reason that her manager did not have Internet access. I called
back to
fax her one of the pages, yet the message desk (you don't actually get
to talk
to a tech helper when you call, you have to leave a message with the
message
desk) said that Rose had not left me a fax number. So I left a new
message
asking Rose to call me. Rose then called me and said that I would have
to next
talk to a marketing person, by the name of Neil Kitajima, who would have
Internet
access and would be able to determine if I was going to get the
software.

By this time it was the second week, and still no answer to my original
question: why don't I get the software with the BJC-240EX? I called Neil
yet as is the case with Canon, I had to leave a message. Neil never
called
back and a few days later I left another message with Rose mentioning
this.
Rose called back saying that she found out from marketing that the web
pages which say that the BJC-240EX is supposed to get the software are
for
American customers only. Of course this is not mentioned anywhere on any
of the web pages, which I noted to Rose. She then said that she would
try to
contact another marketing person to find out if more could be done.

Finally, this last Wednesday, I get a call from Ed Brehnan from Canon
Canada Head Office. I wasn't around to talk to him, yet his message said
that he was sorry that I didn't accept that I wasn't going to get the
software, yet this is Canon's policy. He also added that I should have
known that the Canon web pages info applied to US customers only by
the 'ccsi' in the URL. What? I checked out CCSI and it means 'Canon
Computer Systems Inc.' <- where is the 'The information on these web
pages applies to US sales only'. Nice cover Ed (and the rest of
Canon marketing!) If you screw up, you should admit it and not try to
sneak your way out of it!

We've sent a man to the moon, and that's 290,000 miles away. The center
of the Earth is only 4,000 miles away. You could drive that in a week,
but for some reason nobody's ever done it.
