monitors with the following:
] -In fact, if I was an average user maybe I wouldn't care for looking
] -at the URL, then even IF I knew that CCSI meant something like that,
] -there would be no way that I could have known that CCSI even popped
] -up in the URL, since I never would have seen the URL (as it is possible
] -to 'hide' the URL from the user for most browsers).
That would be comparable to "not reading the fine print" ... as for Hiding the
URL... how did you get there in the first place? Seeing as http://www.canon.com
normally links to www.usa.canon.com if you select North America from their map.
I'm sure I could dig up several companies who use the web to advertise. Just
check your email for spam-advertisers... I would imagine that 90% of them don't
specify what country the promotion is available in, let alone what currency
($9.95 may not necessarily be Canadian currency)
The onus is not on the company to constantly keep you up to date of all the
rules and regulations for their promotion, but to provide an outlet for this
information to be found. On the main page of www.ccsi.canon.com, it has a
section with ABOUT CCSI which lists:
FACILITIES
CCSI Headquarters
2995 Redhill Avenue
Costa Mesa, California 92626
CCSI Technical Support - Customer Care Center
850-K Greenbrier Circle
Chesapeake, Virginia 23320
] -I don't agree with your 'TV advertisement' comparison. TV has
] -dedicated channels, and with these channels you can determine the
] -intended audience based on the source of the channel. In the case
] -of the web, if you don't specify a target audience you are saying
] -that it has non-geographical implications - as the internet is
] -international - you are not just advertising in just one country let
] -alone a continent!. Therefore why should someone in Australia think
] -any differently than I did? It is the responsibility of the advertiser
] -to ensure that the reader/viewer knows these details, otherwise they
] -are leaving the door open for assumption.
No, it is the responsibility of the consumer to determine all factors of a
contest or promotion before they participate in it... otherwise they might be in
for a surprise.
The Internet is international, but some companies are not. Are you saying that a
small company in Armpit, Idaho has to plaster "NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA" all over
it? Or that they don't have the right to advertise at all?
My company doesn't ship to Iraq. We make not mention of this on our web page...
does this mean we're obligated to ship there?
As for television advertisments, that's pretty ambiguous... you're assuming that
all television owners know which channel comes from where, and that stations
don't grab feeds from other countries...
My question is, why didn't you return the printer then?
... you have a nice day too.
