For me, it is just a waste of money. : High school education is good enough for most of the people in : reality. : Besides, what the professors (or teachers) do in the class is to tell : you whatever in the textbook. You can't read textbook by yourself ? Any university student can read a textbook by themselves, and on those occasions where I end up with lousy profs it's easy enough to learn the course from the textbook. Learning material from textbooks is just a small part of university life, I mentioned a whole bunch of other aspects in my previous post. Since you believe that everything that you need to know is written down in a bunch of books, clearly there's no point for you to go to McGill, you're not getting anything out of it. Other people would believe there are things to be learned which you can't get from textbooks, only from interactions with other students in discussion groups, working in groups in laboratories, throwing around ideas with your professors during their office hours, attending optional lectures on campus, etc. If you haven't taken advantage of any of these opportunities to broaden yourself, then it's your loss. : I will be opening up my business in my future. I have enough : capital to start first one (and actually most of students here do but : they rather spend in going through the textbook at university). Hmmm, I seriously doubt most students have enough capital to start their own business, which is why many have student loans to get through university. : By the way, getting hired doesn't mean you know when you get fired. : There are a lot of news around us... cutting the jobs... top rated : companies. Look through your today's newspaper. : Recently, we had a person with PhD ,who had around 10 kids, lost his : job due to merging of school districts. I don't know how things are : going. I just wanted to make a point that university degree won't : guarantee your future at all. No, that's not what you said, you said that university is basically professors reading textbooks to you and it's a waste of money. There is uncertainty in job security whether you're a teacher, or running your own company, but a university education should provide you with the skills to adapt to a changing world, teach you how to continue learning for the rest of your life, and make you a better person. : Doctorate degree won't guarantee your : future. My friends believe and "trust" in university degree. They : think they can guarantee their future by studying hard (and paying the : tuition to "myths") to get a university degree. I say there is a : danger for this kind for thoughts and our society shouldn't support : this type of stereotypical minds. Good point, university education is not a sure ticket to a career, but that doesn't make it useless. : I just wanted to make a point that university degree (or whatever) : would not be the only way to prove (?) that you would be educated, : superior nor successful. That's not what you said, but I'll agree with this point.
