Mike: CIPS has the same mechanisms as the law society, doctors, nurses, etc., for removing or disciplining members, but what you refer to is removal for failing to uphold the requirements of membership. Doctors, nurses, and CIPS members can be disciplined (and dismissed, if it's considered serious enough) following a complaint about their practice of medicine or IT, as the case may be. There has been no complaint about Steve's practice of IT. Steve was removed because the rest of the board eventually came to the conclusion that his behaviour at board meetings was sufficiently disruptive that it could no longer be tolerated. His removal as VP has no effect on his CIPS membership, or his professional designation; but boards have a legal responsibility to ensure that they can function properly, and that was the issue. I have served as a SIG Co-chair in the Toronto section for the Client/Server and Internet SIGS. I have always enjoyed meeting new friends at the CIPS events within Toronto. However, I am troubled by the events that led to removal of S. Galinger from his office. Some of my relatives belong to the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Ontario Nursing Association, and the society of Professional Engineers. I browsed through several publications from these organizations. I found that these organizations have public disciplinary process that removes members and officers from these organizations. All of these organizations have, a public evidence gathering process, a pseudo public trial where the evidence is given, and a public process where the statement of facts is given in their decisions of disciplining a member or officer. I had a hard time coming to a decisions because of a lack of a public process. Where the allegations against S. Gallinger legitimate for his removal from office. Does Steve Gallinger have legitimate grievances against the CIPS board. The sad fact is we don't know. I agree with the many of the members that this has torn this organization apart. Bill Ross has mentionned that we need to reform this organization. I believe we need to change the process for the removal from office. The implied statement that the national board will resign does not provide leadership to resolve this situation. Arguing points in magazines such as Computing Canada is not the right process either. I believe that CIPS needs an independent public body that deals with the removal of officers. Trust us does not cut it from both sides. I believe that members of CIPS who have cooler heads need to take leadership of this issue to repair the damage caused by this distasteful event.
