Help: 28.8 Modem settings

Hi all,

I'm wondering if someone can help me here. I've just purchased a new
USR 28.8 Internal Sportster modem. I've had problems with it from the
start, and I can't get a good answer from either the store I bought it
from or my Internet provider's phone support staff, so I'm hoping
someone here has some ideas.

I CAN get a connection at 28800 (or sometimes 26400), but then
everything loads as slow as molasses (in the range of 150-200 bytes
per second in Netscape). I've got my Trumpet Winsock set for 38400 as
everyone I have talked to has suggested. I've also tried 57600 and
115200 - no difference, so that isn't it. I've also adjusted my COM
port settings in Control Panel to match.

However (and this is the odd part), if I set Winsock for 19200 as I
always had it for my 14.4 modem, I get a 19200 connection AND pages
appear to load at about that speed (1.9-2.1Kbps). So, it's faster
than my old 14.4, but still not what I expect. I've tried changing
everything in my Init strings and erasing the default settings in
trumpwsk.ini. I've tried downloading and reinstalling the entire
Internet access kit for my provider (that was a lot of wasted time!).
I configured it for my type of modem, but that didn't seem to do the
trick. The tech support guy suggested I include "&C1&D2" in my init.
string...hahaha...yeah, that's in there too. :)

BTW, my init string currently reads:

$modemsetup=&FE1L1M1V1&C1&D2&U10X4S0=0S7=90S11=50

With the exception of the &U10 part (which simply insists that at
least a 19.2 connection be made), that ~should~ work for a 28.8 I
would think. Anyone have any ideas? I'm totally stumped.

I use Win 3.1 and have 8meg of memory.

Thanks in advance, please reply via email,
Greg
