Using another bank's ATM machine involves using a network link such
as NYCE or MAC. This is where that nifty $1 charge comes from. Actually,
with Key Bank, I have noticed that that charge will vary from $.50 to
$1, depending on which bank's ATM I use (I guess what network that
ATM uses.) The network most likely doesn't charge your bank the full
$1 ... that still leaves quite a profit for Key Bank's investment in
financial services. Ah, but what can we do? At least I don't have to
carry cash around; I buy my groceries and gasoline directly off my
Key Card and there are several ATMs in the malls. If someone does find
a bank that doesn't charge for other banks' ATM machines, let me know also.
