Richard Nash's classic romance will charm the entire family! Lizzie Curry and her father and brothers are fearfully watching for rain on their drought-stricken farm. Her brothers are a little more concerned about Lizzie: she's an old maid, or about to be. Where will they find her a husband? Lizzie will have none of it, and neither will Deputy File, whom the boys have picked out for her. Into their lives comes Bill Starbuck, the rainmaker, who promises both rain and love for Lizzie. Will she fall for it? Will they all fall for it? Roles: Lizzie - Lead female role. Sister. About 28-32. Mom, sister, friend, maiden Aunt, housekeeper all in one. She has always had to be mature but all her dreams are bursting out of her. She can hardly contain herself at times. Great sense of humor countered with heart-wrenching displays of despair and almost adolescent confusion. Keeps her chin up -- most of the time. Wise, but on the razor edge of actual experience. Huge character release in this show. Moves from despair and tension to joy and comfort. H.C. - The Father. Aged 50-60ish. A grown up Jimmy. Aware of his abilities and aware of his place in the world. He has seen it all and accepted life's ups and downs, good deals and bad deals. He does not know if he has done right -- especially by Lizzie. He is youthful in faith and spirit. Lizzie and Noah are more adult in their actions of daily life, but H.C. is wiser and content -- although he likes a surprise now and again. Noah - The eldest in the family. 30-36ish. Serious and stable. A martyr in many ways. Very together and organized -- wishes all of life could be written down in columns in a book and understood. He may have been a dreamer once, but he has taken the role of running the farm and the seriousness of life has pushed all the dreams out of him. Not a dream in him but a good man and likable. Jimmy - Youngest in the family. 18-22ish. Impressionable and eager, like a young puppy on the verge of respectable doghood. Great potential, but untapped and under-appreciated. Tall and homegrown. This character develops tremendously through the show -- beginning as an almost humorous little boy and finishing as a man with worthy ideas and a good dollop of self respect in him. Starbuck - A con man who will bring rain for $100. Could be aged 25 - 60 depending on the capabilities of the actor. He is a con man salesman who paints dreams to believe in. He wins everyone over with his visions and words, except Lizzie. He has no reality for himself and that is the only aspect of him that is shaky. He wants desperately to have faith in -- himself but doesn't. This weakness is what wins over Lizzie. He is a dynamic character. Dominating. File - the Deputy Sheriff. Aged 30-45. Honest but uninspired and basically afraid of life. It is easier for him to stay as he is than to look for more. Definite chemistry between he and Lizzie from the very start. This chemistry must be evident -- but restricted by File. He is a plain spoken man who doesn't like games and needs to learn to dream a bit. Sheriff - Aged 55-70ish. Older, established. An H.C. with a badge, able to see the good and bad in a situation and a bit frustrated that the younger people can't figure things out for themselves. He is wise and helpful and patient. He is File's only real connection to humanity and his relationship with File is almost that of a father to his son. Supportive, but wishes to give him a kick in the pants on occasion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- N-space <nasadk@rpi.edu>
