you should do a clean install of the 8.1, dont add anything to that clean
8.1 folder and install again Toast. This will take you no more then 30
minutes and then you can check if there is any problem with 8.1 and Toast.

I had problems with Toast 3.5.4 and 3.5.5 and Panasonic OEM CD recorder,
until I updated the firmware of the drive.
